I wonder if the HRM will figure this out!

Big car or little car? These pictures were taken recently by CarShareHFX partner Peter Zimmer in the south end of Halifax. We see the big Hummer confronting the Toyota Matrix and one wonders? Where is the future of cars? Do we need the big behemoth? Even if gas prices have fallen since 2008, the cost of operating a car is very high, about $16,000 a year for the average Canadian (gas, repairs, parking, maintenance, insurance etc.)

At some point, I’m sure many more of us will ask “do I need such a large vehicle?” which couples with “what kind of carbon footprint am I leaving for my children?” and perhaps more than that, its just the costs and the way we use transportation.

What do you think? Will we always drive large vehicles? Will smaller cars become the norm? What about hybrid cars? Will they become popular?

HI all, CarShareHFX is about alternative transportation…

Having problems with the HRM parking ban? Worried about the widening of streets? So are we…

There are so many ways to create ways to decrease traffic congestion and to not be affected by the parking ban. We need a fabric of transportation options so people can give up their cars. This is not rocket science, we do not need to re-create the wheel. What we need is to learn from other cities like Philadelphia, Vancouver, Seattle and Houston. These city governments are building no vehicle zones, safe bike paths, using carshare cars for their fleet and transportation needs instead of owning their own cars and increasing availability to public transit buses. It is the perfect combination. Is there a downside???

OKay, so here is the vision…carsharehfx cars within a ten minute walk of each other, thousands of Haligonians choosing to share cars instead of worrying about parking payments, insurance payments, car payments, maintenance payments, easy access and discounts to Metro transit, more safe bike paths and bike racks, affiliated taxi and rental companies, incentive preferred parking at stores that have values and at meters on Halifax streets…

This means more money in your pocket and you can still get around! This mean less GHG in your neighbourhoods. This means a more integrated mobility system in Halifax.

Yes, we want it all. Did you know that in Philadelphia there are over 55,000 carshare drivers??? In Montreal there are over 700 cars that people share! If we estimate that for each one of those cars 15 - 20 personal use vehicles are not on the road…well you can see what a difference it would make in traffic, parking conditions and good quality of life (less noise, exhaust, etc.)

What do you think? Are you in? What is the down side???

Check out the article in the Chronicle Herald on December 4th. Thanks to the nice work of business reporter Clare Mellor.

Remember the Founder’s Campaign ends on December 10th (which is Human Rights Day). The idea behind the Founders Campaign is to have an exchange with people who come on early. You can be a pioneer with us bringing carsharing to Halifax and help us get the kinks out, let us know what can make it better. Let me know what you think!
